The annual Refrigerated Warehouse and Transport Association National Conference 2011 was held at the Launceston Country Club Tasmania Thursday August 11 – Sunday August 14, 2011.

The hot button topic Energy Efficiency in Refrigeration took centre stage across numerous papers presented over the two focus days Friday and Saturday.

International speakers from the UK and the US together with local speakers from users, contractors and consulting engineers covered case studies and theoretical implications for cold storage energy efficiency.

Mayekawa Australia introduced case study material and technical overview for the NewTon 3000 NH₃/CO₂ cascade system (right) and air curtain Thermoshutter.

The introduction of these products blended very well with other speakers as issues such as:

• Use of CO2 as a secondary refrigerant
• Transition from R22 and other synthetic refrigerants
• Compressor energy efficiency and advantages of using variable speed/frequency drives
• Cold store efficiency relating to door efficiency

Attended by government authorities, consultants, contractors, users and suppliers from the refrigeration industry nationwide, the conference attracted 100 to the valuable 1 day event.

The conference boasted a diverse range of speakers from government authorities including Skills Australia and the Department of Climate Chan
ge and Energy Efficiency, to consultants such as ISECO’s Jonathan Fryer, KAV’s Klaas Visser and Minus 40′s Mack Hajjar.

Mayekawa Australia’s Manager of Sales and Marketing Luke Gardiner delivered the sponsor’s presentation on CO₂ transcritical heat pumps focusing on EcoSirocco, the air heater heat pump of the Unimo family.

AIRAH Conference presentation 2011 “Equipment for CO2 and other natural refrigerants” 

Energy efficiency in refrigeration, abattoirs and food processing facilities was the theme of the stand.  We showed two heat pumps demonstrating a small slice of our range of energy efficiency equipment.

• HeatCOM – CO2 transcritical heat pump with water-heat-source
• HeatPLUS – NH3 heat pump with water-heat-source

As has been reported in the news over the past week a major earthquake (9.0 magnitude) followed by a tsunami have hit Japan in the Sendai area approximately 360km north of Tokyo.

Mayekawa’s main manufacturing facility close to Tokyo is our head plant at Moriya (Ibaraki Prefecture), which thankfully has not sustained any damage and all Mayekawa staff are safe and accounted for.

Currently Japan is enforcing power rationing and consequently manufacturing at Moriya (screw compressors, packages and parts) is likely to be affected.
